"Definitely, Maybe" is the bittersweet story of a young man going through a divorce. His 10-year-old daughter wants to know how he met her mother, so he tells her the history of his complicated relationships with three different women without telling her which one became his wife and her mom, and that means, like the daughter, we don't know until the movie is almost over which of the three women he actually married. "Definitely, Maybe" has a clever, smart script with a better connection to reality than most romantic comedies. Abigail Breslin, the star of the indie hit "Little Miss Sunshine," plays the precocious 10-year-old daughter of the about-to-be-divorced Will Hayes played by Ryan Reynolds. The story goes back about 15 years so that we get to meet his college sweetheart, Emily, played by Elizabeth Banks. Later we meet femme Fatale Summer played by Rachel Weisz, and finally, we are introduced to co-worker April played by Isla Fisher. It's easy to see how Will could fall for each of these women, and it's easy to understand how bad timing and misunderstandings create complications for their love stories. If you don't expect too much, you're bound to enjoy this movie's sweet surprises. One of the three movies nominated for best animated film is in town right now. "Persepolis" is an interesting history lesson about Iran, but its crude black and white animation and rudimentary story telling techniques are disappointing. My advice? Wait till it comes out on video. |
