Back in the 1950's, during the days of the original "Sunrise," one star of the show was Peaches, a monkey. Today we have our own mascot.
You've seen her before. Now Sunny is officially in the spotlight with her very own segment on "Sunrise." "Sunny Says" debuts this morning, featuring Sunny and her furry friends at Pet's Discount. They'll bring you weekly tips and solutions to keep you and your pets happy.
In today's segment, Pet's Discount and Sunny give out training tips.
Pet tips to house training:
According to Wendy Mah from Sirius Puppy Training, make sure to set up an enclosed area where your puppy has access to a resting place (bed or small crate), toys and a training pad. You can also use newspapers.
There are certain times when the puppy needs to stay in the enclosed area. When it first wakes up, before you leave it for any length of time, after a lot of playtime or activity and after it eats. When you know the puppy has relieved itself, then you can let it play in other areas, but make sure you can watch it. Puppies get into trouble easily. They also tend to chew on furniture, shoes and everything else. Only allow them out of the enclosed area when you can pay full attention to it and you believe it it least likely to go to the bathroom.
When your puppy does "go" in a place you don't want, don't yell, scream or hit it. Try to interrupt it and use an encouraging tone to coax the puppy to the right spot. Try not to pick it up, you want the puppy to walk on its own to the right spot. When it does, make sure to praise it and sometimes you can treat them with a little snack.
Once your little one consistently pees and poops in the right place, then you can widen it's area, but do it slowly in small doses.
Pet tips for biting:
Puppies are teething, so they have a tendency to bite. Normally, they learn not to bite hard by interacting with other dogs. If it's not around other canines, you need to teach them this lesson. Wait until your puppy is calm. Then, gently place one of your fingers into its mouth. If it doesn't hurt while it's chewing on your finger, say things like "good girl!" in a soothing tone. Once it bites down to hard, immediately yelp so that it can learn what pressure it too much.
