Kilauea's lava flow has forced five people to evacuate from their homes. The two people living in Royal Gardens were not part of the evacuation. Instead five people living below in Kalapana were evacuated Monday. "One of them was living on their property with expansive trailer and portable but they were evacuated yesterday and I'm glad they're out of there because by today I think their site would have been inundated," said Big Island Mayor Harry Kim. "We've been living out here a year now and everyday is an adventure," said Joe Esposito. County, state and federal agencies are working together to keep sightseers safe. The Civil Defense worries more people will try to get a good glimpse as the lava gets closer to the ocean so it is trying to find a good spot for people to see the lava while staying away from its dangers. "At the present time the lava flow is only about a couple 100 yards above Highway 130, the area we call the previous turnaround site, so at present rate it should hit the highway by days end and from there to the ocean is no more than a 1/4 mile or so," Mayor Kim said. When it does hit the ocean in the next few days Mayor Kim worries about the dangerous steam that is created when it touches the water. Another reason they are setting up the public viewing areas. They hope to have the viewing area set up by the weekend. Along with finding the location they also have to pay to staff it and put up signs, rubbish cans and a portable restroom before it's opened. |
