Nani Vercruyssen, 16, from Roosevelt High School, has been selected to represent the US in the biannual Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships, previously called the Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships, in San Jose, CA, 29-30 March 2008. In 2006, this event was held in Honolulu where Vercruyssen performed to the screams of her home town crowd and received a silver medal. This competition features the top two male and female athletes at the senior and junior levels for the disciplines of men's artistic, women’s artistic, trampoline, and rhythmic gymnastics from thirteen member countries: Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Peru, Russia, Singapore and the United States. Trampoline gymnastics was included in this competition in 2006 and designates juniors as 12-17 years old and seniors 18 plus (with the winners in their 30s). China, Japan, Russia and Canada are by far the strongest in this sport so the event features the best in the world that are using this competition to polish for the August Olympic Games. |
