Gas started spewing from Halema`uma`u crater this morning, creating a huge plume into the sky that was visible for miles. Experts say the plume is unusual and has doubled the amount of sulfur dioxide in the air--making it potentially dangerous for visitors downwind of the vent. However, experts say that a summit eruption is not expected because other activity has not occurred. |
