You Make The Call
Hundreds Apply for New Habitat Subdivision in Maili Print E-mail

For many families on the Leeward coast, life can be tough. Habitat for Humanity's new subdivision will help a lucky few buy and build their own homes. They'll also get the property it stands on.

Mildred Rising Sun used to live on the beach with her husband and children. Now they're staying at the Waianae homeless shelter. But they have to move out next month and Mildred says they have nowhere to go.

"It would just be nice to have something," she said.

"She's just trying to be the best mom for us," her son added.

"A safe place to sleep, going to bed full. We just want our necessities," said Waianae resident Kristen Cortes.

For these people, Leeward Habitat's new subdivision is a dream come true. Families who can't qualify for a traditional mortgage can buy their own homes and lots. But they have to meet certain criteria. Each family must prove their financial need, help build the home and re-pay the mortgage at less than a thousand dollars a month with no interest.

Mildred says it's a small price to pay. "That would be such a blessing you know for us and just for my kids to experience them, you know, building that we're going to have our house."

Informational meetings walk families through the application process. Hundreds have already applied. Problem is, only 31 homes will be built.

"It sounds like it's just a needle in a haystack, but we're willing to take that chance because you never know," Cortes said.

"It just confirmed that we knew there was a need out here and I wish we had a whole lot more lots because there are certainly some wonderful families that have applied," said Hawaii Habitat for Humanity president Mike Sessions.

Each home will have two to five bedrooms. They'll be modest in size and simple in design. But for a few lucky families, they'll provide a better life and a better future.

"We're just going to pray and hope that good things happen cause as long as you put in that effort to do good in your life, good things will come for you," Cortes said.

One last informational session will be held:
