First HS Surf Meet: Reading, Writing and Ripping Print E-mail
Written by KGMB9 News - news@kgmb9.com

Reading, writing and now ripping… Today, students from four high schools went head-to-head in the water for the first ever Hawaii High School Surf Meet.

Students from Kalaheo, Kahuku, Castle and Kaimuki competed in the Department of Education sanctioned event.

Waves were 2-4 feet with occasional higher sets.

After years of debate, Hawaii's Board of Education voted to approve surfing as an interscholastic sport in May of 2004. Many rules had to be put into place, but event coordinators say they're excited the day has finally come.

"It's kinda unbelievable that we haven’t been able to do this until now thats why its finally we are getting this thing done."

These are the requirements the schools must have in order to compete. Each club must have one coach for every six students in the water and one coach on the beach for every 12 surfers. Coaches are required to have CPR and ocean rescue training and student surfers must have an equivalent of junior lifeguard certification. And they need to provide their own surfboards and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. So which school came out on top today? Mike cherry will have the winners coming up in sports.
