"Ginger, the girl dog, is smart but she will use that to get her way. Toby is more of a rascal," said owner Scott Cooley. But the pair have a problem: jumping. They'll vault on almost anyone. Their owner says it's so bad, they've posted a sign to warn strangers at the front gate. "That's kind of the most embarrassing part of being a dog ownership is you never know how they're going to behave in front of friends or strangers," Cooley said. "Because it can be dangerous, they can knock somebody over just being friendly. They can knock somebody over and hurt them," said animal behaviorist Wendy Mah. That's why Mah stepped in. She says the biggest mistake dog owners make is petting the dogs when they jump on you. Don't pet or try to correct them with commands when they're leaping. "She's jumping because she wants the attention. And we've given it to her even if it's to correct her we have given her the attention she is seeking, positive or negative," Mah said. Instead she says stop, stand and stay quiet. "They're so excited and then people come home (and say) 'Sit sit sit no get down get down' and it just makes the dog more excited," Mah said. "Just wait calmly don't say anything the dog will calm down that's when you can come in and pet them, greet them 'That's my doggy good puppy.'" If you have more than one dog, Mah says they often jump as a way to compete for attention. Make sure to direct your petting to the dog who is behaving calmly. "Lets say Ginger got up and she's all antsy. I'm not going to pet her or talk to her. I'm going to go to Toby because he's sitting nicely," Mah said. Soon your dog will be playing nicely, leaping less and looking for other better ways to entertain himself. |
