Before turning down the role of King Kalakaua in the film, Palani Vaughan made some suggestions that director Marc Folby incorporated in the script, but Vaughan said many more changes should be made. "I'm not saying they should stop this. I'm asking them to improve the storyline to use real life events and create a drama around them," said Vaughan. Eirayna Kalei Adams believes the script is contrived especially a love story between the princess and an englishman named Clive. "When you shift the story in such a way, and you put a love story in where there never ever was one, you change the outlook of that person, the perception of her," said Adams. Executive producer Leilani Forby, who grew up in Hawaii, said the love story may have actually happened. "The love interest, Clive, when he died, he reportedly had a press release about their engagement in his pocket, and he died an old man. so yes, there's a romance, but it's not the big part of the story. The big part of the story is what happens to Kaiulani's kingdom while she's away and what she does for her people," said Folby. Language and cultural advisor Puakea Nogelmeir says the thread of Kauilani's story in the film is accurate. He calls the script a sensitive, honorable effort that shows no disrepect to Hawaiians. "Marc, my husband, the director has been working close to five years with cultural advisors, UH professors, language specialists," Folby said. But she admits it was necessary to compress history to get all the major events in. "So I hope everyone gives us a fair chance and knows that this means so much to us and we are all the actors, the producers, the crew everybody working so hard to make this a good film for Hawaii," Forby said. |
