About a hundred unionized workers and supporters staged a raucus rally targeted at the owner of the Ilikai Hotel. Prompted by a drop in occupancy rates, the Anekona Group is planning to cut 27 housekeepers on April 1. Demonstrators and condo owners are trying to pressure the company into changing the plan. "Right now I'm confused... I want to save the Illikai... The Illikai is my home," said housekeeper Emmelyn Labuguen. The property, made famous in the opening of the Hawaii Five-0 series, was bought by the Anekona Group in 2006 for more than $200 million. The owner was planning a $60-million renovation. But condo resident fought to stop the plan because, among other things, they didn't want their property taxes to go up. |
