Lawmakers Pushes for UH Athletic Department Audit Print E-mail

The lawmaker looking to open the books on the University of Hawaii Athletic Department talked Friday about why he's making a push for a state audit.

New Athletic Director Jim Donovan apologized Thursday, for the incorrect amount of debt that former AD Herman Frazier told lawmakers his department had accrued over the last five years.

In May, it was reported that UH was $2 million in the red, but according to Donovan it was actually $4.4 million.

On Friday, State Rep. John Mizuno said it's time for Hawaii to know what happened.

"The audit is a good thing because it will actually highlight the strengths of the University of Hawaii athletic department but its also going to talk about its weaknesses. Any concerns that they have. So, I think I would welcome the audit that's going to be a benefit to the university and also to law makers too. We need to know what's going on as well as the people of Hawaii," said Mizuno.

If the proposal is cleared by lawmakers, the audit could begin within two weeks.
