"We're pretty boring," laughed Hickam resident Ken Bragg. "We'd probably be at the house watching TV." Instead of doing that, Bragg, his family and dozens of others are watching a movie at the community center, set up just for the environmental event. The movie is being powered mostly by panels on the roof. The idea of turning off lights for one hour started in Australia. Two-point-two million people last year joined in to ease up on our planet and the idea has caught on. This year more than 200 cities have participated. Crowds in Manila, Philippines counted down to the 8'oclock hour. Then it was lights out. One of the tallest buildings in Denver, Colorado also joined in. And in San Francisco, the famous golden gate went dim. "I think it's awesome," said Tina Bragg, Hickam resident. "I think we should do it on a more regular basis." KGMB9's crater camera didn't catch any dramatic changes in Honolulu's skyline, but every little bit helps and the folks at Hickam are setting a good example. Who knows what more will happen next year? "You only get one chance of trying to save the earth," said Tina, "and if everyone does just this little bit, I think we can turn around the damage we've already done." Hawaiian Electric did notice a rapid drop of 11 megawatts just before 8 p.m. Saturday. But a few minutes later, it went back up about 9 megawatts. HECO isn't sure if that had anything to do with Earth Hour, but said it will do furthur analysis. |
