Five days after Aloha Airlines stopped passenger service, we checked on flights from Oahu to Kauai next weekend. Seats on go! Airlines are up $10.00. Traveling during peak hours on Hawaiian will cost you $89 one way. But at least inter-island travelers have options. Hawaii tourism officials said about 9,000 ATA passengers are stuck in Hawaii holding useless return tickets. "We all started scrambling," said Florianne Molina, visiting from Vallejo, California. One day after the ATA shutdown, 260 stranded passengers shelled out more than $300 for a seat on a specially added Hawaiian air flight to San Francisco. That's money on top what they paid for their ATA ticket. But they had no choice. It was the only way to get home. "I gotta go to school," said Molina. "I can't be down here forever." To help the stranded visitors, Hawaiian has added two more flights to San Francisco Monday and Wednesday. "It doesn't lighten up much until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week," said Rex Johnson of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, "so any extra section we can get out of anybody is just going to be super." And there's always the Hawaii Superferry, which resumes service on Monday. Right now, it is the cheapest way to travel inter-island. It's $39 each way. |
