Masumi Watanabe's Memorial Service Print E-mail

It was a year ago Saturday that the 21 year old disappeared on Oahu's North Shore just a week before she was to return to Japan.

For the first time, her entire family is here to mourn her loss and to celebrate her life.

Before and after the memorial service, Masumi Watanabe's parents and her two brothers stood in the front of the church to accept condolences from the many local residents who felt compelled to be here.

The family does not speak English, but they were able to feel the heartfelt emotions of their supporters even when there were too many words for their translator to deal with.

"We want to let you know that our heart continues to go out to you and your family," said Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, "I hope your strong and unwavering faith in the prayers of the people of Hawaii will comfort you in your bereavement."

Her father spoke, pausing every few sentences so that his words could be translated.

He thanked everyone for coming. He also expressed gratitude to the police department and to the volunteers who organized the service

He talked about how his daughter learned to ski on Mt. Fuji and how his family wishes they could have spent more time with her exploring Hawaii.

Nearly everyone has heard that she was a shy person who avoided strangers.

"It took time for her to make friends. However, once she knew the person she enjoyed conversing with a big smile," said translator Mieko Crans.

Masumi Watanabe was also artistic as her drawings clearly show.

The church pastor has a daughter of his own.

"I wonder how I would be in your shoes. I admire you. for your strength of character, for the model that you are," said pastor Kahu Curt Kekuna, Sr.

This experience had to be hard for the family but Jessica Rich of the Visitors Aloha Society said they are grateful for the outpouring of support.

"Even though many people here didn't know Masumi, we know her in our heart. It's as if she was one of us," said Rich.
