A lot of Americans enjoy beef and picking the right cut could make the difference when it comes to your health. It's the focus of today's KGMB9 and HMSA's Sunny Side Up. Ramsay Wharton is live from the Sub-Zero/Wolf showroom with more.
Healthy Beef Tips: 1) Beef is an excellent source of protein, iron, B vitamins and zinc. Beef is also the richest source of Alpha Lipoic acid, a powerful antioxidant. 2) Select lean beef, such as round, sirloin, chuck, or loin. Buy "choice" or "select" grades of beef rather than "prime." Look for lean or extra lean ground beef (no more than 15 percent fat). 3) Up to a 3 oz. serving of lean beef is a recommended (about the size of a deck of cards). To reduce risk of cancer, eat less than 18 oz. of red meat per week. 4) Choose cuts of meat that have the least amount of visible fat and trim this visible fat off of meats. 5) At least 29 beef cuts are considered lean. Beef is designated as "lean" when it contains less than 10 grams of total fat, 95 mg of cholesterol and 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat. Related Link: |
