Movie Review: 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' Print E-mail

The new romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was shot right here on Oahu's North Shore, mostly at the Turtle Bay Resort. And I'm (KGMB9's Terry Hunter) happy to report that it's one of the better films made here in recent years.

First of all it comes from Judd Apatow's producing team. These are the people that gave us "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" and "The 40 Year Old Virgin." And it's safe to say that if you enjoyed those movies, you'll like "Sarah Marshall," a very funny comedy that manages to be sweet, good hearted, and...well, raunchy.

The main character, Peter Bretter, is a neurotic underachiever whose TV star girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) dumps him for a rock star. When he goes to Hawaii to lift himself out of depression, guess who he runs into at Turtle Bay.

Jason Segal, who wrote the script, stars as the jilted lover, who tortures himself with what his ex is doing now. Peter even follows Sarah and her boyfriend to their room even as a friend back home in L.A. is screaming at him on his cell phone to get away from them.

Peter's reaction to seeing his ex and her new beau is pathetic but funny. And laughing at him is almost like laughing at yourself...for anyone who's ever been a fool for love. And who hasn't?

Peter's struggle to get through his vacation include a night out with the desk clerk by Mila Kunis, a TV actress we're bound to see more of in movies before long. And Apatow regulars Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd have small parts as hotel workers.

But the funniest character in the movie is Russell Brandt as Aldous Snow, Sarah's preposterous new boy friend, a self-absorbed Lothario who is oblivious to Peter's suffering.

It's worth mentioning that there are at least four non-sexual nude shots of Jason Segal in this film. One is right at the beginning when his girl friend breaks up with him-- a scene the writer-actor confesses happened to him in his own life. That kind of raunchy humor pushes the envelope a bit, but it really is funny.

The bottom line is that "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is a crowd pleaser-- so funny it would be hard to take offense.
