National park service workers evacuted 2-thousand visitors in the park area at 11 this morning. Emphasizing, however, no one is in any immediate danger. Shifting winds in the Kau disctrict led to the sulfur dioxide increase. The park will reopen when SO2 levels diminish. Park rangers remain on duty monitoring the situation. “We are actually monintoring on every 15 minutes. We have rangers out doing the monitoring we are also looking at the national weather forecast for this area and as we get updates that'll help us determine if we're going to reopen or not.” Meanwhile, county officials have issued a color code red for Volcano Golf and Country Club Estates. Outdoor activities should be avoided and those sensitive or with respitory problems should stay inside or leave the area. Those with health issues in the color code orange Volcano Village, Mauna Loa Estates, Ohia Estates, Royal Hawaiian Estates, and Hawaiian Orchid Island Estates should stay inside. The rest of the Kau district is under a code color yellow. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Current Sulfur Dioxide Conditions |
