The used shoes were collected and put in a giant pile outside of Niketown in Waikiki.

Event organizers say the footwear will be put to good use.

"We're trying to keep the shoes out of the landfills. We're using the by-product after we're shredding the shoes and put them into different types of products, basketball courts, playgrounds, astro turfs, a lot of different uses," said the man.

And the event was a success, final count 27,030 pairs of shoes were donated.
