It's now up to the governor to negotiate the purchase of the 880 acre property on Oahu's North Shore. If she can't reach a deal with the property owner, the state could use it's power of eminent domain to take over the land. The state would likely sell off the resort itself and turn the rest into a state park. "We should keep our eye on the ball and focus on the fact that Kawela Bay and Kahuku Point will be public domain for seven generations yet unborn," said Sen. Clayton Hee. Also Thursday, a bill passed naming taro as the official state plant, and lawmakers approved new incentives for people to preserve agricultural land. The legislature did not pass any Opihi picking moratorium for Oahu. It's still okay to pick Opihi if you can find them. |
