Several dozen picketers are staging a week long protest on the side walk in front of the 837 room Pacific Beach Hotel.
They're angry that the hotel won't negotiate with I.L.W.U local 142, and they're calling for customers to boycott the hotel. since the majority of the tourists who stay here are Japanese, they've even arranged for Japanese unions to pass out leaflets in Tokyo and they've won the support of many lawmakers.
"The hotel has not bargained in good faith, is not looking out for its employees and they should be ashamed of themselves," said Roy Takumi.
"Look at all the other hotels around here who have contracts with workers who are sharing the aloha spirit. This is not the norm. This is a very bad exception to the rule," said Angus McKelvey.
According to union sympathizers still working at the hotel, the call for a boycott is hurting them as well as hotel management. Occupancy is down and some housekeepers are working only two days a week.
"I hope they understand I feel sad for my co-workers who are not getting hours because of this boycott. I'd love to have everybody come back, but it seems like there's nobody winning in this situation," said Douglas Kometani. |
