Fishing Boat Pulled Off Reef; To Be Sunk Print E-mail

Just before 4pm Saturday, the high tide helped free a fishing boat that's been stuck on a reef off Kewalo Basin since late Thursday night. But the vessel is not salvagable. The U.S. Coast Guard says it will be sunk along with the 8,000 pounds of fish still on board.

The salvage company began rigging the vessel around 1pm Saturday and started pulling during the afternoon high tide. The tow line snapped at least once Saturday. The last attempt included about an hour of tugging at different angles and different distances before the 47-foot fishing boat named "Robin" finally got pulled off the reef.

The boat got stuck late Thursday night with five people on board. They are all okay.

Since then, the stuck boat has been quite an attraction, drawing spectators for hours as they watched the crew's efforts.

"They did a pretty good job," said Rodney Evans, as a tugboat pulled "Robin" away.

"I've seen a number of boats get stuck out here and it's always sad," said another spectator Ted Robinson, "but it's amazing what can do done in terms of moving it off."

The boat was being pulled out to sea off Kewalo Basin and was about a mile offshore. The coast guard and the state are working to figure out how best to sink it. They say due to the condition of the boat, there was no safe way the fish could be off-loaded.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources says there is a fair amount of damage to the reef, but won't know the extent of it until an investigation is complete.
