Hawaii Unemployment Still Below Nations Average

Hawaii's unemployment rate won't be updated for a few more days, but we can still see some trends by looking at the number we already have. Check this out, even though it's been moving higher, Hawaii unemployment remains below the national rate. Unfortunately there has recently been a half-point jump in joblessness in California, our top source of visitors. The newest weekly tally of Hawaii applications for unemployment checks, just out Thursday, shows across-the board increases to levels last seen in 2003. Which brings me to the gender thing. Since November, US adult men have lost 700,000 jobs while adult women have gained 300,000. It's because men have more factory jobs, which are diminishing, and women have more health care jobs, which are increasing. As Business Week Magazine put it, American men are in recession, women are not.
