The beef at Islands restaurant is not from the recalled batch but the general manager says everytime e.coli makes headlines, the phones start ringing. "The last time this happened, about 6 months ago, it was a big scare," said GM Chris Serna. "We filed a lot of calls, probably 30 calls a week and I anticipate the same thing will go on from today." This recall this time is Palama Meat Company out of Kapolei. Palama Meat says e.coli was found in some of the raw meat products it gets from the mainland. None of the finished products, meaning meat that would go to the stores, tested positive for e.coli. And no one reported getting sick. But just to be safe, Palama Meat is recalling 4,500 cases of beef under the brand name "May's." That includes boxes of teriyaki patties, picnic patties and ground beef family packs and chubs. Don Quijote, Times and Foodland supermarkets have pulled the recalled meat. Back at Islands, an Ala Moana hot spot, the burgers are still a top order. Their beef comes from a Colorado vendor, but they're ready to calm nervous customers. "I'm sure a lot of people will be pretty concerned," said Serna, "so we'll try our best to make sure people feel comfortable coming here." For a complete list of the recalled products, click here. |
