'Dancing with Celebrities' Raises Money for Ballroom Print E-mail
Written by Ramsay Wharton - rwharton@kgmb9.com

Who would've thought that baseball and ballroom dancing could go together? But it does. Hawaii's Agbayani family knows all about these two sports. Local boy, Benny Agbayani made a name for himself playing for the New York Mets in the 2000 World Series. The St. Louis Grad plays ball in Japan these day and has dawned the jerseys of the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox. And some would say, Benny knows a lot about ballroom dancing thanks to his parents. The two are involved in a big event this weekend. Ramsay Wharton joined them this morning at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

The Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association is the largest dance organization in the state with more than 2,000 dancers, who take lessons at 18 different sites in the islands. But the group needs a larger, main dance facility to allow instructors a improved venue to teach, learn and practice.

The HBDA says if you join, you'll have an opportunity to take dance lessons from excellent instructors at nominal fees and even attend events to show off what you've learned. There are even opportunities for you to be part of a choreographed dance exhibition. According to the HBDA, membership is $10 for the fiscal year. All memberships expire on March 31 regardless of when you join. Members who join in the last quarter (January - March) of the fiscal year pay $5. If you have any questions, please call the HBDA office at (808) 848-7789.
