The carriers picked up non perishable food residents left next to their mail boxes. The donations will be given to the nearest food bank to help feed the hungry. Pearl City Post Office led the way last year collecting the most pounds of food in the state. "The reason why we do it right before the summer months is because the kids are out of school so the free lunch programs that they have are not available to them. so we have the opportunity of filling up the foodbanks," said Adele Yoshikawa. Last year, about 1,000 of Hawaii's mail carriers collected more than 311,000 pounds of food. The nation as a whole collected over 70-million pounds. |
