Former Church Manager Sentenced Print E-mail

A former office manger at a church in Kailua was sentenced in Circuit Court on Monday for two separate schemes.

Kimberly Wheeler, 39, ripped off Windward Unity Church and also ruined her daughter's credit by stealing her identity.

"I'm extremely sorry. I've hurt a lot of people and through this experience I've lost my family, my husband," said Wheeler.

Wheeler pleaded guilty to swindling the church in Kailua out of more than $44,000. She wrote checks to phony charities and even took out a credit card in Reverend David McClure's name. She used the money to buy cameras, computers, and even a trip to Disneyland.

"That has impacted our ability to continue our charitable work. Financially, we're still in the process of recovering from this," said McClure.

Wheeler also stole the identity and ruined the credit of her own daughter, who was just 12 years old when the crimes started.

"The defendant used her own daughter's social security number and other information to apply for and receive 12 credit cards, and as you can see from the police reports left them all delinquent," said deputy prosecutor Chris Van Marter.

"She's remorseful. She's sincere and she admits she made mistakes, learned her lesson," said Wheeler's attorney, Jeffrey Ng.

The judge sentenced Wheeler to 18 months in jail and five years probation. She must also pay the church back after she gets out of prison. But the reverend is still rebuilding trust in the congregation. At first, some suspected he stole the money. Membership has been declining. The reverend and his wife, however, trust Wheeler can turn her life around.

"We forgive her. We have forgiven her since the beginning, and we also believe there is the court to help with her human mistakes," said Rev. Donna McClure of Windward Unity Church.

Wheeler will be credited for the nine months she has already spent in jail.

"The past nine months has been really hard. I don't think I could ever even speed again. I'm so terrified of ever ending up back where I've been," Wheeler said.
