There is a famous cave at Waianuenue in Hilo. It is where Hina lived. Hina would beat kapa day and night in her cave. And the striking sound began to annoy Kuna, the lizard that lived further up the stream. So Kuna began throwing rocks over the falls so the water would rise and fill Hina's cave, bringing an end to her and her kapa beating. So Hina called her keiki, Maui, for help. Maui landed his canoe at the mouth of this Wailuku river, at a spot where this rock stands until today and is called "Waa o Maui." |
