January 19, 2004.

It's around 4:30 in the afternoon at Kalihi Valley Homes. Police say 27-year-old Zachary Kalani pulls up to the security gate to get clearance to go in to visit his brother. Police say he's was driving a stolen Chrysler CV that had been taken from a Makiki street nearly two weeks prior. The security guard asks him for a photo ID and car registration which is procedure, but "he has neither," says Sgt. Kim Buffett from CrimeStoppers. "He does provide though a copy of the birth certificate with his name, Zachary Kalani and a receipt from Sears, which is a completely different name actually from the registered owners name."

Police say the guard also sees that the ignition has been punched out, but unable to prove the car is stolen, allows Kalani to drive into the complex. Then he calls police.

"Police arrive, the security officer points out the car and sure enough, stops the vehicle, runs a check of the license plate and it's stolen. The passenger, who is the brother of Zachary is arrested for three warrants and Zachary is arrested for warrants and the auto theft."

Kalani is eventually convicted of auto theft and given probation. But police say Kalani has violated his probation by not checking in and is on the run.

Police say Kalani has numerous arrests and other convictions for trespassing, harrassment and property damage. He's described at 5-foot-9, weighing about 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He also has several tattoos. "We don't have pictures of them, but he does have wb and two dots, love on the left hand, royal and two dots on left arm and 'Kalani' on his back and a big scar on his right forearm."

Kalani is known to frequent the Waianae and Makaha areas.
