YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - The government in Myanmar now reports the death toll from this month's cyclone is around 38,500 -- but other reports put the number much higher. The Red Cross says the true death toll may range from nearly 69-thousand to close to 128-thousand. An estimated two million survivors are still awaiting aid that has so far reached perhaps 10 percent of those in need. The ruling military junta told Thailand's visiting prime minister that recovery efforts are under control. The Thai leader says the Myanmar government promised him that survivors aren't battling disease outbreaks or starvation. But things could get worse before they get better, with some forecasters saying there is a good chance another big storm will form within the next 24 hours and head across the Irrawaddy delta area. |
