They've been preparing to sing at the upcoming Ocean Awareness Festival. These little tykes are from Pünana Leo o Kawaiaha'o, a Hawaiian language immersion school for Pre-K students. They're going to perform in just a minute, but first we want to speak with Joe Awong about the event.

The parent group of Pünana Leo o Kawaiaha'o preschool and Chevron will hold the 10th E Mälama I Ke Kai Ocean Awareness festival at the Kapi'olani Park Bandstand on May 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The 10th anniversary of this popular event will be the most expansive E Mälama I Ke Kai yet, with activities ranging from live performances by some of the best in island music, including Natural Vibrations, to keiki rides and games, to a swim and surf clinic taught by professional surfers and lifeguards.

Event activities include:

  • Live performances at the bandstand by:
    Natural Vibrations
    Pilioha
    Käwika Trask
    Küpaoa
    Nä 'Iwa'iwa
    'Ai Pöhaku
Nä Pua Lei o Liko Lehua
the keiki and kumu of Pünana Leo o Kawaiaha'o
  • Mobi PCS is presenting a "Keiki Fun Zone" with free, unlimited access for keiki to inflatable rides
  • Professional longboard surfer and Pünana Leo o Kawaiaha'o parent Duane DeSoto has rounded up 30 professional surfers and lifeguards who will be volunteering their time to host a swim and surf clinic for keiki. Clinic will run from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. at Kaimana Beach.
  • There will also be keiki games, crafts, food, silent auction, Hawaiian cultural presentations and a talk story about the Waikïkï area.

Proceeds from the event benefit Pünana Leo o Kawaiaha'o (PLOK), one of eleven 'Aha Pünana Leo preschools in the state. Located on the grounds of the historic Kawaiaha'o Church in Honolulu, PLOK first opened its doors in 1995. As a Hawaiian language immersion preschool dedicated to preserving the native language of Hawai'i, PLOK's entire curriculum is conducted in Hawaiian, and the school currently serves 16 students.
