Honolulu Symphony Receives a Huge Donation Print E-mail
May 15, 2008 07:00 PM

Musicians with the Honolulu Symphony are finally getting paid thanks to a generous gift from a retired business woman.

The symphony isn't saying who she is, but we do know the long-time volunteer has donated almost $1.2 million, the largest individual gift in the organization's history.

The money will pay the salaries of more than 60 musicians who've been working for free for the past several months.

"She's a true angel, she didn't tell me what to do with the money other than please keep the orchestra together, didn't ask for notoriety, in fact doesn't want notoriety," said Tom Gulick.

"It's been difficult for the last several months. A lot of us have taken on extra debt, but now we have a chance to get some of the way and hopefully we'll get completely caught up in pay soon," said Steve Dinion.

This Saturday at the Convention Center the "Ports of Call" symphony ball includes a silent auction for several travel packages and three luxury cars.
