They don't think it would help prices that much. It would be hard to forgo massive profits even if it would do others some good, but the Saudi's economists are telling them that extra production wouldn't help. Crude oil went to about $128 a barrel Friday, and could top $140 before Summer is over, no matter how much is pumped. Surging demand in China and other developing countries is costing us at the gas pump but there is an interesting development on that. Gas has risen so much on the mainland that Honolulu now has lower per gallon prices than each of the five major metroplexes. The price gap is greater when you factor in the much longer average commuting distances in these other cities. With the Saudis declining to help, the administration is trying something else. The energy department has been buying oil alongside everyone else, pumping it into four salt caverns on the gulf coast. On Friday, officials announced that in July they will stop buying oil for the strategic petroleum reserves. |
