Just a few hours ago crews removed the cones opening about 30 parking spaces. The sidewalk and bike path were reopened. On Tuesday, crews began removing 750 feet of the pipes that sat there for nearly two years. Those who live and work in Waikiki say they are happy it's all over. "I used to go all the way from the end all the way down couldn't find no parking, then after that i would look for side streets that doesn't have meters but this is much easier because there's more parking now so it's more available," said Benny Ng, who works in Waikiki. The project was an emergency fix after a break in a main force line in 2006 sent nearly 50 million gallons of waste in to the Ala Wai. The city spent $45 million on a new bypass system and built new underground pipes taking the sewage away from Waikiki. |
