YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - An official says a top U.N. envoy has arrived in Myanmar to meet with the junta leaders and assess the needs of cyclone victims. U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes was received at the airport by Myanmar's deputy foreign minister. Holmes is expected to urge the isolationist junta to open its doors to more international relief for some 2.5 million survivors of this month's cyclone Nargis. U.N. official Daniel Brown says Holmes will visit the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta tomorrow. He also is to meet with U.N. officials, aid groups and the Myanmar Red Cross. Brown says Holmes will meet senior government leaders in Yangon on Tuesday and leave Myanmar on Wednesday. |
