Many of the places we are very familiar with have been referred to by their nicknames for so long, that their correct Hawaiian names are slowly forgotten. Mokuolo'e, or "Coconut Island," in Kaneohe Bay is one such place, named for Lo'e, the sister of two brothers from Ewa, all of whom were sent away from home by their parents for always quarreling. Kahoe became a farmer here in Kea'ahala. His brother Pahu became a fisherman just near that hill over there. Lo'e, the only girl, settled on an island in the bay, Mokuolo'e. They assumed roles in the community, contributing to the collective. |
