About 30 firefighters were called to Mokiawe St. at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. Officials said about half of the home was engulfed in flames and smoke. Eight people were inside when the fire broke out. All managed to escape without injury, but their dog did not survive. Several neighbors heard the commotion and rushed over to help. "We heard a pop next door and then we looked and suddenly the propane tank blew, so we were trying to kill the fire with a little garden hose, but it was just too big. We couldn't do anything," said neighbor Henry McShane. The people living in the home are staying with family members. Damage is estimated at $430,000. |
