While surfing has become popular around the world, it is surfing's Hawaiian history that Pohaku Stone wants to make known. Pohaku's appreciation for his own roots fuels this passion. "My father taught me the ways of our kupuna; the making of wooden surfboards." Pohaku's college students are fortunate to be exposed to this perspective as he shares with them. "He wants us to have a true understanding and aloha for surfing from a historical, Hawaiian perspective." "As we make these boards with him, he also instills critical values, like how to act appropriately when in and around the water." Pohaku is a skilled waterman, a former professional surfer and lifeguard for over 15 years. However, he is continually humbled by the surfing prowess of Hawaiians of old. |
