On Wednesday, attorneys announced a $240,000 settlement for a class action lawsuit in Hawaii. Before menu foods recalled contaminated pet foods that were sold under more than 100 brand names last year, as many as 1,000 animals across the nation became seriously ill and died including ten pets in Hawaii. The owners of those animals have filed separate lawsuits that will not go before a judge until next year, but Wednesdays class action settlement means that about 2,000 Hawaii residents could be reimbursed for buying the bad food and for taking their animals to a vet after they learned the food wasn't safe. Attorneys Emily Gardner and Thomas Grande said you must have receipts for both to get the money. Anything left over after consumers are paid will be donated to the Hawaii Humane Society. One woman whose business is caring for animals says the only good thing about the pet food crisis is that it has motivated people to pay more attention to what they feed their pets. She said that buying super premium foods may save you money in the long run. "Later on what could happen is you could have substantial veterinary bills because of the foods that they're eating now, and then you're paying far more later," said Kerry John. To file a claim with your receipts for a share of that settlement call 866-325-3621 or click here to download the form. |
