There are many beautiful Hawaiian art forms, particularly those that adorned the models at last Friday's MAMo fashion show. Marquez Marzan's creativity with pieces like this showcases the beauty of traditional lauhala weaving in a contemporary form. It is notably different from the art of our kupuna. But it is no doubt connected to our past. And it is this connection to the past that makes it Hawaiian. Kealopiko partners, Jamie Makasobe, Ane Bakutis and Hina Kneubuhl, see their designs not only as fashion, but as a means to educate their community. |
