Senator Ron Menor Pleads No Contest to DUI Charges Print E-mail
May 23, 2008 07:54 PM

Flanked by his attorneys, Hawaii state Senator Ron Menor has decided not to fight a DUI charge.

Officers arrested him April 27 on the H-1 for driving too slowly and found he reeked of alcohol.

Menor said he and his two sons were at the Chicago concert at the Blaisdell and he had two glasses of wine at a late dinner.

In court Friday, the prosecutor revealed Menor had an alcohol level well above the legal limit of 0.08.

"He took a preliminary alcohol screening, the result was 0.147. He had two minors in the car, sons age 17 and 11," said Renee Sonobe Hong.

Because he had a passenger under 15 years old he must serve a mandatory two days in jail. He's also been fined $800.

"Today I took full responsibility for the charge against me. I have always supported the need for strict DUI laws and I fully accept my sentence, which I will serve immediately," said Menor.

That night he refused a field sobriety test. He also told officers he was driving slowly because he had a fractured foot and one old contact lens in his eye.

"There were things that could be challenged in court obviously, we did an extensive investigation to obtain everything to verify the veracity of his statements, but there were other factors -- they are in the police report -- that obviously made it a very difficult case," said Howard Luke.

His DUI arrest has shocked his colleagues at the legislature.

Senate Pres. Colleen Hanabusa said she doesn't anticipate censure for Menor but he can expect to spend time regaining the trust of the community.

"They should be the ones to determine they feel to give him anther chance, a vote of confidence or how they are going to proceed, and I think Senator Menor realizes it is that trust that he must address now," said Hanabusa.
