The ceremony, now in its tenth year, has grown with each year. From 6,000 to more than 30,000, dozens of cameras capture each moment. As the people gather to remember those who lived before us, those who are no longer with us. "This event is not a hawaiian thing, not a japanese thing, not a buddhist thing, it's a human thing," said Given Tokunaga. But there were lots of Hawaiian things about the ceremony from the chanting to these surfboard lanterns. "This is for all the servicemen we've lost in all the wars and to honor some of the family members we lost in the last few years," said Mark Mockard. As the sun went down, people lined the shore line and gently pushed their lanterns out. Each filled with a prayer for those who have passed away. |
