Robbie and Brittany Bergquist started "Cell Phones for Soldiers" after hearing about a soldier in Iraq who ran up thousands of dollars in phone charges by calling home. The youngsters collect those old cell phones and recycle them and with the proceeds buy phone cards they send to American military people overseas so they stay in touch with their loved ones at home. In four years, the Bergquists have sent about 450,000 phone cards worth more than $2 million, to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. "We heard this tory of a solider that had run up an 8,000 dollars cell phone bill and so Britney and I payed the bill and started this program for soldiers," said Cell Phones for Soldiers Robbie Bergquist. "They drop off their old phones and we then take it to a recycling company that gives us 5 dollars and then we buy calling cards for the troops," said Cell Phones for Soldiers Brittany Bergquist. You can donate your old cell phones at all 16 AT&T stores across Hawaii. |
