A check presentation soon became a celebration for the University of Hawaii.
The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation is gifting the school $5 million to turn it's athletics facilities by 2011.
The renovations include a new field, offices, locker rooms and bleachers that will seat at least 3,000 fans. It's an upgrade that benefits the entire campus.
"We're the most visible thing in the University of Hawaii bar none. And if we're down or if it doesn't look right, or it's not welcoming that's not good for the rest of the University. And this gift is going to be a jewel for UH athletics," said Jim Donovan.
Since Ching's money will fund more than half the project the new complex is named after Ching, and from now on the old Cooke Field will be known as Ching Field. Both families decided it was a fitting tribute.
"He first of all said Jack there's so many things in this state named after Cookes. I think it's good to have a change," said Jack Tsui.
Clarence T.C. Ching died in 1985 but the local developer was represented by his family which included his two brothers. His relatives says his love for sports inspired this latest charitable donation by his foundation.
"Football was his favorite sport. When he was in his 30's, he sponsored a football team in Hawaii we used to have these football leagues so at his early age he was really a sports fan and he did it for Hawaii," said Ray Tam.
Upon it's completion, the new field will be used by many UH teams, intramural squads and students. There are also plans to host other events including high school tournaments.
"I think it's impacting for really generations of college students. I think 20 years from now we're still going to be thanking the Ching family for turning what recently has been an eye sore into eye candy," said Mike Trapasso. |
