Driver Dies in Nuuanu Pali Drive Crash Print E-mail
June 01, 2008 05:21 PM

Police said the driver of that truck was speeding when he crashed Sunday morning.

It happened on Nuuanu Pali Drive about a quarter of a mile from the Pali Lookout. That's where emergency crews responded just after 10 a.m.

When they arrived they found this ford pick-up smashed into the side a large tree. The driver was a 35-year-old Tongan man.

Police said he was driving in the town-bound lane when he lost control, swerved to his left and slammed into the tree.

Emergency crews said the impact killed him instantly even though the airbags deployed.

"Its pretty smashed up. The front compartment is pretty much pushed through the passenger seat and the driver is pinned between the wheel and the seat itself," said Honolulu Fire Department Captain Robert Main.

No drugs or alcohol were found in the truck.

Police though, said speed was definitely a factor in the fatal crash.
