Reichel is best known for his singing voice on the five albums he's recorded. But his role as a kumu hula, a teacher of hula and Hawaiian culture, is more important to him. Happily, this well made disc gives viewers lots of both: 24 selections, featuring his singing as well as the dancing of the halau he's taught for twenty years. "Maunaleo" is inspired by the mountain peak on the left side of Maui's Iao valley. But as Keali'i explains, "the underneath meaning --the kauna-- is actually talking about my mother: how she is strong and beautiful and resilient like this particular mountain." On both the Blu Ray Disc and the regular DVD, viewers have the option of seeing subtitles in English or Hawaiian. The goal is to help people better understand Hawaiian poetry and dance....to bring back old traditions and make them work in the present. "When you learn about your own culture, you bring your ancestors with you." Keali'i says, "and that's one of the greatest support systems that you can get. If that's the message that we can send out to everyone watching this DVD, then our work is done, and the stress is worth it." Another especially beautiful selection is "Ka Nohona Pili Kai" which recalls the north shore Maui home of the singer's grandmother. "Beloved are these fond memories," the lyrics say. "Beautiful and majestic is my seaside home." |
