Brian Stone has never had a driver's license so he walks a lot and takes the bus to get around. At times he'll cut corners to save time. We saw him jaywalking across the five lanes of Dillingham Boulevard. Then he crossed against the red light coming back.
"I always jaywalk anytime, as long as there is no car coming you know what I mean," said Brian Stone.
This at the exact same spot of a deadly hit and run. At 9:00 Wednesday night a 79 year old man was jaywalking across Dillingham Boulevard between King and Kaaahi Streets. He was clipped by an SUV then fell into another car and was dragged 30 feet. He later died at the hospital.
Police say the driver of the SUV stopped momentarily then took off. Witnesses say he was driving a light colored SUV with paper license plates so police think it's new and may have some light damage in front.
As sad as this case is people that work and live in the area say they aren't surprised someone was hit and killed while jaywalking.
"A lot of people are willing just to run across, I've seen one person walk across and stood at that center yellow line for a few good minutes pointing fingers at people saying stop for me stop for me and nobody does," said Jonathan Juan, who works at Hawaii Plastics Corp. which is right next to the scene of the accident.
"The cars run the lights a lot, they've got the yellow or red light and they run right through it and people are still in the crosswalk," said Cheryl Mena, who walks this area five days a week.
The fatality did nothing to stop people crossing against the light.
"You got to get across the street you got to get across the street," said Stone.
Of the seven hit and runs on Oahu this year so far none of the drivers have been caught. If you have any information call the CrimeStoppers hotline at 808-955-8300. |
