Kapolei Chemical Odor Sends People to the Hospital

A strong chemical odor in Kapolei sent nine people to a hospital Monday morning. Fire crews got the call after employees at the Kapolei business park began getting sick from the smell. Almost two dozen people complained about it but a group of workers from Bank of Hawaii got it the worst and were taken to two different hospitals. Some thought the smell might be linked to a pest extermination in the building Sunday. About 75 employees were evacuated for about five hours.

"We have a routine maintenance cycle to control pest like we all do here in Hawaii, so we went to work on this immediately and evacuated people from the call center when a number of them were complaining about these smells," said Raymond Trombley.

"This our first occurence of anything like this and we are taking this very seriously. Obviously our customer safety is our primary concern as well," said Josh Joyce.

Fire investigators aren't sure what caused the odor but they tell us it probably isn't from that terminex treatment. They believe the spraying would have triggered problems then if that was the cause.
