"Select a subject, introduce him to yoga and follow him anywhere he goes until he finds a practice that transforms him," said Kate Churchill. Her subject, unemployed journalist Nick Rosen, is a true skeptic. "I find myself intimidated by the yoga project. Spiritual awakening is a concept I cannot even relate to at this moment," said Rosen. The director, her subject, and a film crew begin a six month journey across the globe, examining good, bad, and unique teachers of yoga. One of their favorites is Norman Allen, who lives on an isolated Big Island farm. "He's a really interesting guy because he doesn't charge his students for yoga. He charges students if they don't come to class and he has a very unconventional, quirky rough humor to him," said Churchill. "When I'm twisting myself into a pretzel in a yoga studio, I'm thinking, what the hell is the connection between this and enlightenment," said Rosen. The filmmaker says Mr. Allen was her main inspiration for making this movie. She made four trips to see him before he allowed her to come with a camera crew and though she practices yoga herself, she doesn't believe that it's right for everyone. "The goal of this film is to make people question and think about what they want to do for themselves to find happiness, whatever form that comes in: yoga, rock climbing, surfing, reading," said Churchill. "Enlighten Up!" screens Thursday night June 12 at 6PM in the Castle theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. |
