"It is my distinct honor and pleasure to present to you the 2008 Maui Film Festival Maverick Award. in honor of your commitment to making movies that matter as well as your commitment to environmental justice for all creatures of earth," said Barry Rivers. The former James Bond says he quit school at the age of 15 and has been an actor since he was 18. "I've liked every film I've ever done. because I got to work, and I love to work," said Brosnan. Since leaving the Bond character behind a few years ago, Brosnan has demonstrated the amazing range of his acting skills. In "Evelyn" he's an unemployed Irish man with a drinking problem who fights to get custody of his kids. In "The Matador" he plays a jaded hit man who's trying to change his profession. Next month he'll be in the film version of "Mama Mia" with Meryl Streep. "It's pure entertainment and that's what we need at this time in life," said Brosnan. These days, Brosnan lives mainly on Kauai. "I'm Irish and this is a bit like Ireland but with the heat turned up. I love it and it has been great for my children to grow up in a rural neighborhood," said Brosnan. Saturday's highlight at the festival will be an under the stars screening of "the great buck howard," a comedy-drama starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, and Hanks' father, Tom. |
