A recent court decision denied developer Haseko a permit for construction of a drainage outfall that would discharge storm water runoff into the ocean off Oneula Beach. Opponents say it could potentially harm Limu beds and affect the Hawaiian cultural practice of using seaweed for medicine and food. "We are not against development or having a drainage. We are against the pollution that will come down from the mountainside and from undeveloped areas. we know that both can remain together," said Michael Lee. Their claims are supporter by a study done by a Florida researcher that says storm water discharge harms Limu but a study by a marine scientist who works with UH came to a different conclusion that storm water runoff does not harm the seaweed. |
